In this talk, Dr. Conor J. Donnan will discuss the political solidarity that developed between the Irish and Native Americans starting in the mid-nineteenth century on through the mid-twentieth. The mutual admiration and transatlantic solidarity led to intermarriage, joint political campaigns, innovations in the labor movement, and weapon exchanges. But as the talk will also demonstrate, Irish Americans were also unwitting soldiers for U.S. expansion, engaging in bloody assaults on Indigenous people.
Conor J. Donnan (PhD, University of Pennsylvania) is a lecturer in American Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He moved from Ireland to the United States to research the relationship between Indigenous nations and Irish nationalists during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
